DEA at Aston University

Research at Aston Business School on data envelopment analysis and performance measurement/management in general began at the mid 80ies. The development and use of nonparametric frontier methods in general and DEA in particular is the main focus of Centre for Performance Measurement and Management. In addition there is a full semester course in postgraduate on efficiency analysis. Research at Aston University is focused on specific DEA applications in private and public sector organisations. Theory is tested and extended, where necessary, to address productivity issues in a host of different organisational environments. A number of industrial based MSc/MBA projects on DEA are undertaken each year as a part of this research approach whilst a number of PhD projects are currently under progress. Finally, tutorial and research events are organised periodically at Aston in order to publicise the theory and application of DEA in the academic and industrial community.

  • Current research activities involve:
Seeking to develop models for incorporating quality issues in assessing comparative efficiency. The assessment of prenatal and neonatal care efficiency and effectiveness in the UK has been use as an application area.
  • Investigation of the efficiency and effectiveness of public sector organisational units. This ongoing research covers a wide area of public sector activities including the assessment of comparative efficiencies of local authorities, the assessment of value added of public schools, etc.
  • Developing decision aid systems for improved performance of private sector relating organisations (sales forces, insurance companies, pubs and restaurants, etc.).
  • Methodological issues concerning the extension of current DEA models in order to address theoretical issues such as weights restrictions, target setting, comparison between parametric and non-parametric method, DEA models over time, incorporating DEA in resource allocation models, etc.
  • Developing and improving a PC based decision support system for assessing comparative efficiency (the PIM-DEA software).
